"Convenience Store Blues" Book Review
I started reading it on the plane back home.
Originally, I planned to leisurely read it at a cafe in Boracay, with the stunning White Beach in front of me, enjoying a cool air-conditioned breeze, an iced Americano, and a bite of mango pancakes,
but my itinerary didn't allow for it, so I ended up reading it after a short nap on the plane, a bit regretfully.
The reason I chose this book was that my boyfriend picked it out from the best-seller list, saying it was the most interesting novel.
At first, it was so captivating that I was completely immersed in it!!
I even read it while waiting in the long line for immigration checks and the shuttle bus.
Until the identity of Dokgo was revealed.
Ah.. Why did the Seoul Station homeless person have to be a doctor?
I wonder if the author projected his own views on powerful professions like doctors into the story. It's like a drama or something...
I was so disappointed with the ending that I gave it a 2 out of 5-star rating.
When I told my younger sister, an avid reader who fills her mind with books,
She simply said, "It's a novel..."
And that was it.
True, it's a novel, so it's a plausible ending, but...
I didn't like the author's views on professions and the world in general throughout the entire storyline.
The female part-time worker, a 9th-grade civil service exam prep student who handled customer complaints at the convenience store, was eventually recruited as a store manager at a different convenience store with the help and guidance of Dokgo. (She no longer prepares for the 9th-grade exam.)
She also creates a YouTube channel called 'PyeonPyeon' (Convenient Convenience Store) and becomes a YouTuber.
One author, after pursuing acting, eventually switched to writing. The author's view that writing is better than acting was apparent.
Our amazing Mr. Dokgo seemed to have steered everyone's lives in a better direction.
In the end, he's a former doctor who had lost his memory.
Ugh, I thought I had found a great novel, but the ending ruined it.
Even when he apologized to the woman who died during surgery due to his mistake, I didn't feel any sincerity or sadness.
I'm someone who cries at the end of the movie "Family Fan" even after watching it 10 times...
My sister told me there's a season 2, so I checked the company's online bookstore, but it wasn't there.
I might borrow a hard copy next week when I go to work.
