I'm so mad.
They said I had over USD 200 worth of duty-free items and made me pay over 200,000 won in taxes in cash.
Really angry
This is after they reduced it from 568 USD.
I understand that when you re-enter the country, if you have duty-free items worth over USD 600, you have to declare them and pay taxes.
But
Why should I?
My belongings
I bought them duty-free!
Just because I entered Boracay?
The Philippines!
They want me to pay another 500,000+ won in taxes for this.
They said they automatically charge taxes on duty-free items over USD 200.
What a stupid situation.
My face turned red from arguing with them so much.
I said I wouldn't have bought this much cosmetics, cigarettes, and bags if I had known.
Then they reduced the tax from 500,000 won to 200 USD.
And they didn't give me a receipt for the tax I paid.
Aren't you trying to keep it all for yourselves?
If I hadn't explained myself, I would've paid the full 500,000 won.
Isn't this a ploy to pocket the money?
100% sure.
In fact, when I bought a bag duty-free at the Incheon Airport branch, the staff member said...
I should have listened to them.
Why that gray Balenciaga shopping bag?!!!!
Why did I pack it without thinking? What kind of glory was I expecting to get from it?
:: Kalibo Boracay Airport Entry Duty-Free Limit ::
Please refer to this information when purchasing items, or, like the Incheon Airport staff said, you can just tear open everything at the Kalibo Airport.
Or, don't buy anything and just enter.
It's unreasonable to impose customs duties on duty-free items over USD 200 when so many Koreans visit as tourists.
Even the Kalibo staff admitted they know this is unreasonable.
Ugh, I'm getting angry again...
When I was looking for a trash can to throw away the annoying shopping bag, they asked for it back. LOL They kept it for themselves. LOL What are they doing? Seriously.
I was so excited after landing in Kalibo and took a ton of pictures.
They really check every single piece of luggage to collect taxes. They're fixated on the shopping bags.
If you don't want to start your trip to the Philippines by paying taxes and ruining your mood, I recommend not buying any duty-free items at all.
The lines are long too...
They thoroughly check duty-free items.
They compare each item to the receipt and verify everything.
There's also a limit on how much Philippine Peso (PHP) you can possess, which is 10,000PHP or less. So, it's best to bring US dollars and exchange them at Kalibo Airport or in D'Mall. The exchange rate is better there.
I exchanged USD 1 for 51.30 PHP at the airport, but almost all exchange shops in D'Mall were offering 51.40 PHP. LOL
Second round of anger... LOL
Exchange the amount you need urgently at the airport and explore D'Mall to find a good exchange rate for the rest of your money.
The weather was amazing once I got out of Kalibo.
The Shangri-La staff greeted me warmly, calling me by name, and it helped me forget about the anger LOL
Road to Boracay with beautiful weather
I think I would have died from regret if I had paid 500,000 won.
I should have researched beforehand.
